SECOND HALF SHAKEDOWN
We are halfway through the season…always a good time to check in on the Blind Squirrels’ predictions and also to see whose route to the playoffs is looking more brutal as we head forwards.
Up in the Stars Conference, the picks were for Toronto, Rochester, Parlor City and Tallahassee to win their divisions. Two of those picks are looking pretty solid at the moment with the Talons already 5 games up in their division while the Americans are 3 up in theirs. We’ll have a better idea of where Parlor City sits after their Week 9 divisional showdown with Salem, although the two teams will meet again later in what could be an even higher-stakes game. Toronto is the only Stars division prediction currently not with at least a share of the lead. The Spartans trail Lyon by a game.
Wildcard picks were Bennington and Natchitoches. The Bulldogs are 5-3 and a game back, right on the number for a possible wildcard berth. Natchitoches is sitting at .500 presently, but is looking forward to one of the easiest second-half schedules in the EFL. Its opponents over the final eight weeks have thrown together just 23 victories thus far.
Down in the Stripes, the picks were Glendora, New Jersey, St. Louis and Charleston. And, well, two of those are looking good. The Dragons are 2 games up and have a tiebreak win over nearest trailer Perth in their division. The Geechee are a game up on Columbus City at present in their division. But the Crusaders, 4-3-1, are 3.5 in back of undefeated Coos Bay, definitely one of the early season's best stories thus far. St. Louis is 4 games back with a ton of work if it hopes to catch Canton and Milwaukee, or even be a consideration in wildcard speculation.
Speaking of, wildcard predictions in the Stripes were for Milwaukee and Perth. The Wild, at 6-2, are looking solid as they battle Canton for top honors. Perth, currently 5-3, is a game off the pace and, once again, faces one of the most brutal back-half schedules in the league. Wallabies fans will likely need at least one upset if they’re going to play beyond Week 16.
Here’s a look by division at how many combined victories each team’s remaining opponents collected in the front half of the season. It’s a pretty wide spread as the hardest schedules average out to about 2.5 wins per opponent more than the weakest remaining schedules.
