THE KING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE NEW KING
Daniel Dehner connected for a 56-yard kick on overtime to snap an amazing run of post-season success by the Parlor City Phantoms and advance the Rochester Americans to the next round 23-20. For the first time in four seasons, there will be a new EFL champion.
That certainly didn’t appear as if it would be the case early. Parlor City vaulted to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and extended to 17-3 after David Mitzel’s 2-yard catch with less than three minutes remaining in the first half. But the Americans rallied in a big way. Alexander Thomas found Marcus Raasch for 61 yards just seconds later. After a timely forced fumble and recovery, Thomas found Dale Jewell from 13 yards out to tie the game at 17 going into intermission.
Parlor City never seemed to be the same team after that. The Phantoms punted on 4 of their first 5 possessions in the second half, fumbling the other one. Late in regulation, they managed a 10-play, 76-yard drive to force OT as time expired with a 27-yard field goal, but couldn’t capitalize in the extra session, even after intercepting Rochester on the very first play of bonus time.
Rochester now heads to Tallahassee, site of a 62-6 beatdown at the hands of the Talons back in Week 10. Elsewhere…
Toronto 41, Lyon 9Nathaniel Finley threw for three touchdown passes and finished one yard shy of 300 to help steer Toronto to direct the Spartans to their third win of the season over Lyon. Up next is a road trip to Salem to face a Witches squad they nudged out of the post season a year ago.
Milwaukee 34, New Jersey 27Edward Rodiguez threw three first-quarter touchdown passes to help Milwaukee break from the gate early with 24 first-quarter points, but it was Billy Bailey’s pick-six in the final minute of the contest that sent the Wild through to the next round and sent the preseason favorite of the Blind Squirrels home. Philip Gordon flashed his way to 316 all-purpose yards and two TDs as Milwaukee now heads to Charleston for a rematch of a crazy 40-36 contest in last year’s opening playoff round.
Coos Bay 30, Mt. Washington 0The post-season’s feel-good story of the first playoff game in Coyote franchise history crumbled quickly as Coos Bay’s Eugene Stokes threw two touchdown passes as part of a 21-point first quarter, leading the Red Rocks to a 30-0 shutout victory. Up next is a trip to Glendora to face a Dragons team that has looked nigh unstoppable for much of the year. The two teams have not met on the gridiron since Week 2 of the 2029 season.
