Sorry gang for the lack of the write-up for Week 2...opted for the sleep since I had to be up early for coaching. Could be more of the same toward the end of this week/early next as we are flying to San Fran (which will hopefully be a gloomy somber place after the Chiefs WIN THE SUPER BOWL TODAY!!!)

No Phaldun, not THAT kind of "super bowl" ;)

At the halfway mark of the 2030 Elite League season, week 8 headlines are abound with the electrifying performance by the Glendora Dragon offense up to this point. Is there no stopping them? What in the world is in their Gatorade?

The league commissions have sent officials to test their water, locker rooms, bathrooms, and cafeteria everywhere they play for the last three weeks and found absolutely nothing illegal or out of the ordinary.

Are they **** bent on revenge for losing the last 2 Elite Bowls to the Parlor City Phantoms? Well the Phantoms and their new coach are not putting up the numbers they have been used to in recent years. Those that think the blind squirrels are wrong again about PCP still have them making the playoffs at best. At this point, it looks as if it does not matter who faces the mighty Dragons. They will be dinner in the end.

MID-SEASON CHECK-IN (aka yes, the league admin is still alive...)

We are halfway through the season, so it is time to see how the Blind Squirrels are doing for another year. But before that, my apologies for the relative lack of game info this season…I just got slammed by life and have been trying to dig out ever since.

Halas Division – Toronto leads pre-season pick Lyon by half a game and both teams would be in the postseason if things ended today. Reno is 3 games back and an off-season move from Aspen to Las Vegas doesn’t seem to have been the answer to the Wampas’ ailment. The leaders will play again in a couple weeks, but beyond that, Toronto has a friendly schedule that features 8 back-half opponents with just 24.5 wins to their credit thus far. Lyon will have to try to close ground against a slate that posted 34 first-half wins.

Brown Division – Rochester was the pick and Rochester is a game up on both Hawaii and Maine while Natchitoches is four games back. The Americans have a game against each of their closest pursuers coming up with the contest against Maine important given the Event’s head-to-head win earlier this year. Looking at the back-half schedules, Rochester’s opponents won 37 games in the first half, Hawaii’s took 28 and Maine’s won 32. The Islanders were a pick for the wild card preseason, but are a game and a half off that pace right now.

Shula Division – Salem and Parlor City sit atop the division with identical 7-1 records, but the Witches get the nod by virtue of a head-to-head win which they have a chance to avenge this week. The Squirrels called Salem while insulting Phantom fans with a no-playoff prediction. The former might have been a good call. The latter flat-out sucked. Arkansas is 4 games back and Bennington 5. Salem’s back-half opponents have 28.5 wins right now. Parlor City’s have 40.

Walsh Division – Tallahassee is undefeated and the Squirrels are smiling. Tennessee is 4 games back and Boise and Star City are both 1-7. Clearly the pick of Star City for a wild card slot is not looking like a good one for the Squirrels this season.

Knoll Division – Glendora is unbeaten and 3 ahead of Perth, exactly where the Squirrels forecast them to be. Brooklyn and Santa Fe are each 1-7. The Dragons and Wallabies have two games against each other, so there’s plenty of opportunity to close the gap, but Glendora’s opponents have 34 wins while Perth’s have 42, one of the highest counts in the league. That’s bad news for Wallaby wildcard hopes.

Landry Division – Coos Bay and New Jersey share 7-1 records, three games better than Rancho Cucamonga and five better than Tacoma. The Crusaders took the first head-to-head meeting with the Red Rocks this season. The rematch is in two weeks, but both teams sit pretty for the post-sesaon, which was the Squirrels’ call. New Jersey opponents in the back half of the schedule won 38.5 games. Coos Bay opponents posted 30.5 wins. RC’s hopes are pinched by the fact that they’ve already played 3 of their 4 games this season against the divisional leaders.

Parcells Division – Milwaukee, at 6-2, is the only team with a winning record in the division. Canton is next-closest with a 2-1/2 game gap between them. St. Louis is 3-5 with Ft. Drum taking up the tail at 2-6 overall. The Wild were the call here, so the Squirrels are feeling good. Wild opponents in the back half of the season only won 27 times in the first eight weeks of the season, so Milwaukee fans are feeling pretty good about their chances too.

Gibbs Division – Charleston is 6-2 and a game in front of Mt. Washington as both were picked to advance in the preseason. Columbus City and San Diego log in at 3-5 overall. The Geechee dropped the first head-to-head against Mt. Washington, so a week 15 rematch could loom large. This could be a great race as both teams have opponents who won a total of 32 times in the front half of the year.

Overall, 8 teams enter the back half of the season in the Stripes Conference within 2 games of one of the two wildcard positions, so a good chase lies ahead.

PLAYOFF UPDATES

There’s four games left and the race for the playoffs are heating up. The first teams have punched their tickets while others are jockeying for position.
In the Stars Conference, Salem (10-2), Parlor City (10-2) and Tallahassee (12-0) have laid claim to three of the six playoff spots. Toronto (9-3) is two and a half games clear in the Halas Division and, barring disaster, looks good there.
That leaves the insanity that is the Brown Division. Rochester (7-5) leads by a game over both Hawaii (6-6) and Maine (6-6) and can either control its destiny or plunge the division into complete chaos by virtue of having games remaining against both teams. The Americans also have a critical game this week against Stripes Conference playoff hopeful Mt. Washington (8-4).
Maine and Hawaii play this week in a contest that will place one of the teams in a more-precarious position (unless they tie…).
Whichever two teams emerge from the Brown without the champion’s trophy will still be part of an insane wild card race in the Stars. Lyon (6-5-1) has the inside track for that spot right now. Hawaii, Maine and Tennessee (6-6) are all a half-game back. And just to make life exciting, lets go ahead and mention Reno (5-7) as still very much in-play for now. The good news for Lyon as it looks to hold off the field of challengers is that the Kings don’t have another opponent currently sporting a winning record the rest of the season.
So lets hit the Stripes Conference, where juggernaut Glendora (12-0) is the only team locked in so far. The Dragons have tallied 714 points thus far (!!) and show no signs of slowing down.
In the Landry Division, New Jersey (9-2-1) leads Coos Bay (8-4) with Rancho Cucamonga (7-5) clinging to some longshot hopes of a late-season push to the title. Milwaukee (9-3) is closing in on the Parcells Division crown after a 44-0 smackdown of Perth this past week. Canton (6-5-1) is the closest pursuer, but faces an absolute Murderer’s Row of a final 4 games. Charleston (10-2) leads the Gibbs Division by two games over Mt. Washington.
The drama here is for the wild card spots. Coos Bay and Mt. Washington currently lay claim to them. Perth (7-5) is a game back, but features three games against teams with 10+ victories remaining on the schedule. Someone pissed off the league commissioner…
Rancho Cucamonga has a chance to make a move with a game remaining against Mt. Washington, but also has undefeated Glendora to close out the season. Canton’s late-season plight, documented above, will also challenge efforts to close the gap.

Some great football ahead, so stay tuned for the action!

PLAYOFF WATCH…Week 13

Hats off to Toronto for adding their names to the post-season bracket. And just like that, there are only two spots remaining in the Stars Conference. Stripes folks should start to join the party this week as Glendora waits to see who else wants to rumble.

So let’s go to the crazy that is the Brown Division. Twenty unanswered points were enough to lift Mt. Washington to a 23-17 win over the Rochester Americans. Combined with a last-second 41-yard Karl Demelo field goal that gave Hawaii a 16-13 win over Maine, that leaves the Americans and the Islanders in a tie at 7-6 atop the division. Maine is a game back with three to play. The Americans travel to the Islanders this week to settle the tie atop the division. Maine pulls a home date against the Snappers.

In the wild card chase, Lyon (7-5-1) won 20-12 over Las Vegas to maintain its half-game lead. IN addition to the Brown Division folks, Tennessee, a 41-13 winner over Arkansas remains in the chase at 7-6 overall.

Still no movement in the Parlor City-Salem battle in the Shula as both teams won to remain locked with 11-2 records.

On the Stripes side, New Jersey stumbled for the second straight week to see its lead over Coos Bay shrink to a half game in the Landry. Rancho Cucamonga is a game and a half back, having won its last three games. In the Parcells and Gibbs, all the front runners won, leaving things unchanged. Milwaukee can lock up the Parcells this week with a win over Canton.

The wild card races sees Coos Bay and Mt. Washington, each 9-4, in the driver’s seats. Rancho Cucamonga has a game to gain if it wants in. Canton, St. Louis and Perth are each within 2 games or less as well.
