CRUSH CLIP TALONS IN OT
William Mertens’ 49-yard field goal with mere seconds remaining lifted Canton to a 29-26 win over Tallahassee in a clash of unbeaten in Week 5. The game-winning kick saved a game that saw the Crush rally from a 23-13 second-half deficit to grab a 26-23 lead with just over 2 minutes to go in regulation, only to watch the Talons drive into range for a 32-yard Justin McCord field goal to force overtime as time expired in the fourth quarter. The Talons also appeared to be going in for a TD early in the fourth quarter with the game knotted at 23-23 a hit inside the 1 dislodged the football and sent it bouncing into the end zone where the Crush recovered for a touchback. Keith Scott had 285 yards throwing the ball for the Crush. His counterpart on the Talon sideline, James Herrin, finished with 286 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the loss. Looking around the rest of the EFL in Week 5…
Wild 7, Bombers 3…Shane Hale’s 2-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter held up throughout the entire game as Milwaukee shut down Brooklyn by a baseball-like 7-3 final. The Wild defense held the Bombers outside their 40 for the entirety of the second half, holding Brooklyn to just 204 yards of offense.
Hefty Buffalo 16, Bandits 13…Christopher Wilson’s 30-yard field goal as time expired capped a 10-0 fourth quarter for Fort Drum and lifted the Hefty Buffalo to a 16-13 win. All 10 of the Fort Drum points came in the final 3 minutes of the fourth quarter. Devon Dominguez’s 58-yard TD reception with just over 2 minutes to play knotted the game up for the Hefty Buffalo.
Wallabies 26, Snappers 13…Donald Isenberg scooped up a first-quarter fumble and took it 37 yards to paydirt, lifting Perth to a 10-0 lead that it would never relinquish. Donald Schott had a pair of 5-yard touchdown receptions for the Wallabies. Both teams are now 2-3 on the season.
Americans 28, Islanders 17…Whatever ChrisBroNext said between the third and fourth quarters to his Rochester team, the Americans got the message loud and clear with 22 points in the final 15 minutes to rally past Hawai’i 28-17. Roobert Alexander hit Guillermo Jordan for a 28-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. Marcus Raasch would add a pair of 8-yard TD runs, the first coming just 11 seconds later as the Islanders fumbled the first snap after the kickoff.
Dragons 45, Stampede 3…The high-octane Dragon offense broke free for another 45 points and 577 yards in dispatching St. Louis with ease. David Puddy had 450 yards and 5 passing TD’s on a night where he also threw a pair of interceptions in the red zone to empower Glendora to move the football at will. John Claypoole and Michael Chery combined to catch 16 passes for 249 combined yards and a score in the contest.
Phantoms 28, Marauders 3…The two-time defending champs had showcased pretty much every element of their team in the first four weeks of the season, so in Week 5 it was kicker Manuel Williams’ night. Williams drilled seven FG’s (in eight tries), including kicks from 51, 53 and 55 yards out as Parlor City moved to 5-0 on the season.
Assassins 21, Spartans 14…Ralph Blake’s 52-yard touchdown reception with just under 4 minutes to play made the difference as Columbus City took a 21-14 win from Toronto despite the Assassins holding a 387-231 yardage edge on offense in the contest. Those extra yards couldn’t make up for 4 Nathaniel Finley interceptions, however, including the last one thrown near midfield that the Assassins converted into a touchdown on their first snap following the miscue. Solomon Benefield with two of the four picks for Columbus City.
Red Rocks 40, Twisters 6…Coos Bay held Arkansas to just 103 yards of offense while Elmer Mongomery amassed 167 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdown receptions in a game that wasn’t that one-sided until the Rocks threw up 20 points in the final period. Brian Armstrong was 22-for-29 for 220 yards and 3 TD’s in the victory.
Witches 58, Wampas 0…Salem had its way with Aspen, which continues to start QB Paul Campbell to its detriment (0-for-25 with 5 INT’s tonight). Franklin Ray had 126 yards rushing and a TD for the Witches, who also saw Jonathan Embree throw for 268 yards and 4 TD’s. Wampa fans are wondering when vet Gerald Peters will get a shot.
Bulldogs 31, Tennessee 24…Frank Turner’s 75-yard TD reception on the first play of the second half sent Bennington out to a 28-3 lead before Bulldog fans had to watch nervously as their team held on for a 31-24 victory after being outscored 21-3 down the stretch. Turner finished with 183 receiving yards as David Sisk topped the 300-yard mark passing for the Bulldogs. Jerry Belk had 358 passing yards for Tennessee, who also saw backup Tony Lee enter the game and connect for a pair of TD’s.
Golden Pterodactyls 9, Burn 3…Star City held Boise to just 186 yards of total offense as the Golden Pterodactyls came out on top in a kickers’ battle by a 9-3 count. Sloppy quarterback play kept both teams from sustaining anything in the way of offense. The signal callers combined for a 33-for-61 night with four interceptions thrown.
Kings 30, Event 7…Aside from a 75-yard scoring reception by Jacob Parish midway through the third quarter, this one was all Lyon. The Kings saw Donald Dubois rush for 93 yards and a score while Brian Williams threw for 202 yards and a TD. The Event were hurt by committing a pair of turnovers inside their own 20 in the contest.
Geechee 38, Riptide 6…Charleston rolled out nearly 500 yards of offense to roll past the Riptide. Much of the Geechee damage came in the third quarter when, already up 17-3, quarterback Edward Jackson connected with John Wilson for three touchdown plays of 77 yards or more to push the lead out to 38-3. From there, the Geechee cruised. Jackson’s final line was a gaudy 16-for-18 for 428 yards and 5 TD’s. Wilson pulled in 288 yards worth of receptions.
Cobras 13, Coyotes 13…After playing the entire fourth quarter with the scoreboard deadlocked at 13, the Cobras and the Coyotes decided to play another 10 minutes, which still didn’t resolve matters in this tie contest. Anthony Ford was 36-for-54 slinging the rock for Rancho Cucamonga, but the Cobra QB was never able to engineer a drive the snakes, who held Mt. Washington to 176 yards of offense over the course of 70 minutes.
Crusaders 27, Thunder 7…Jose Flannigan’s 5-yard reception with just under 4 minutes to play may have saved Tacoma from a shutout, but it wasn’t enough to challenge California on the scoreboard as the Crusaders cruised to a 20-point win. John Germaine and Duncan Meyer each broke the century mark rushing, combining for 206 yards in the contest. Jacob Perez added 197 passing yards and 3 TD’s, two of those going to Paul McCartney.
