DEFENSES DOMINATE WEEK 2
The defenses of the EFL were on full display last night with 9 of the 16 victors holding their opponents to less than 10 points overall. On the other hand, parity has not been particularly on display yet this season as 13 of the league’s 32 teams hold 2-0 records while another 13 sport 0-2 marks. A roundup of last night’s action…
Talons 20, Americans 6…James Castillo and Anthony Dunn each ran for touchdowns to help lift Tallahassee past Rochester in a meeting of playoff teams from last season.
Golden Pterodactyls 18, Snappers 9…Erik Easter’s TD pass to Gary Spinner with 12 minutes to go put Star City in front by an 18-6 count and helped the Golden Pterodactyls improve to 2-0 this season.
Islanders 31, Bandits 0…Curtis Brown threw for 314 yards and a pair of TD’s as Hawai’I blasted past Santa Fe. The Bandits have now been shut out in three of their last four regular season games going back to last season and only crossed midfield twice against the Islander defense.
Wild 24, Burn 6…Milwaukee erupted for three touchdowns in the final quarter to break open a low-scoring battle and post a 24-6 victory. John Richardson threw a pair of scoring passes in the final 7 minutes to help account for the breakout.
Crush 31, Stampede 3…Keith Scott threw 3 touchdown passes and Patrick Kimball returned an interception 97 yards for a score to help lift Canton to a comfortable win over St. Louis.
Hefty Buffalo 27, Tennessee 12…Christopher Wilson kicked 6 field goals to help propel Fort Drum to a 27-12 lead. Through three quarters of the contest, the Hefty Buffalo place kicker was locked in a duel with Tennessee counterpart Kenneth Goodwin as the game stood 15-12 in Fort Drum’s favor through three quarters. A sack in the endzone, a Devon Dominguez TD reception and the last of Wilson’s kicks blew the game open in a 12-point fourth quarter.
Event 24, Wallabies 21…Maine scored the final 17 points of the contest to rally from a 21-7 deficit and seize victory. Steven Jimenez threw for 307 yards, but give accolades to the Event defense. After Michael Gee’s 6-yard TD pass with 9 minutes to go in the third quarter put Perth ahead 21-7, Maine surrendered just 24 additional yards from scrimmage the rest of the night.
Cobras 9, Bombers 5…Herman Kramer’s three field goals from 47 yards or more were enough to inch Rancho Cucamonga above Brooklyn on the scoreboard, despite just 100 yards of offense on the night by the Cobras. The two teams combined to go 1-for-27 on third down conversions. Not a typo.
Phantoms 51, Spartans 17…Give Tony Strait another 6 TD’s and 410 yards to his credit after Parlor City ravaged Toronto. Each touchdown toss was to a different receiver, although Strait continued to show the most love to David Mitzel with 114 receiving yards.
Riptide 13, Thunder 3…In a game where the two protagonists failed to achieve 300 yards of combined offense, nothing was certain until San Diego’s Wesley Greenwell ran in from four yards out with less than two minutes remaining to ice the Riptide win.
Dragons 38, Red Rocks 15…David Puddy was 30-for-35 throwing the rock for 349 yards and 5 TD’s as the Dragons cruised past the Red Rocks. Coos Bay trailed 38-6 entering the fourth quarter.
Coyotes 13, Assassins 10…Charles Gonzalez’s 20-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner as Mt. Washington remained perfect on the year. Fred Coleman was 12-for-19 with a TD pass for the Coyotes, who last began a season 2-0 in 2024.
Crusaders 12, Geechee 10…Lloyd Braun connected on a 52-yard dagger as time expired to lift California past Charleston in a low-scoring thriller. The Geechee defense was wiped out after the contest, having spent nearly 41 minutes on the field against the Crusader offense.
Witches 38, Twisters 12…Jonathan Embree threw a trio of TD passes, two to receiver Roy Hitt in a 38-12 victory over Arkansas. Franklin Ray added 111 yards on the ground with seven of his 18 carries resulting in gains of 10 or more yards.
Bulldogs 30, Wampas 6…John Thomas returned the second-half kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown as Bennington blasted out of an early 6-3 hole to deal defeat to Aspen. David Sisk threw for 298 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Kings 20, Marauders 3…Brian Williams threw for a pair of touchdowns to lift Lyon to a 2-0 start to the year. Williams’ first scoring toss, a 27-yarder to Edward Honeycutt, was the only score of the game until the fourth quarter when he added a TD of 8 yards to Larry Marmon.
