PHANTOMS REPEAT WITH EASE
Parlor City scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions in the second half to blow open Elite Bowl XII en route to a 48-21 victory. Head coach Phaldun remarked in the pre-season that this year's Phantoms might be better than last year's installment. After a mid-season quarterback switch and an unexpected late-season fold that threw them into wild card status, it was a dominating night of football that returned them to the pinnacle of the EFL.
First half TD passes to Joseph Lee and David Mitzel countered a John Claypoole run to give the Phantoms a 14-7 lead. The flood gates opened soon after the second half began. Steve Phillips hauled in a 22-yard TD pass barely over a minute into the third quarter. Leroy Rivera added a TD run with 9 and a half left in the quarter and Larry Bock may have delivered the dagger with a 15-yard interception return for a score to transform the contest into a 34-7 spread.
Dragons QB David Puddy stopped the bleeding with an 18-yard strike late in the third quarter, but any thoughts of closing the 4-TD gap in the waning minutes were crushed as Lee pulled in his second TD pass of the night on the first play of the fourth quarter. Jackie Schaffer added a 63-yard reception late to close out the Phantoms' scoring. David Slaven had a 33-yard pick-six for the Dragons in the fourth quarter to account for the rest of the scoring.
Tony Strait, not even a starter at the beginning of the year, walked off the field as the Elite Bowl co-MVP after carding a 30-for-51 night that resulted in 324 yards and 5 TD's against the lone interception. Normally that would be enough to take the award outright, but in this case it would have been a crime not to split it with Bock, whose 4 interceptions of Puddy neutralized a potent Glendora offense and earned him a rightful share of the honor. Rivera added 179 all-purpose yards.
