The Bombers didn’t need a spotless afternoon to stay spotless in the standings. They threw two interceptions, let the Falcons claw back within three, then answered with the kind of fourth-quarter punch that keeps a 10-0 team looking every bit as dangerous as its record says. Burlington beat the Falcons 20-10 Sunday, and the division is already clinched. William McClure’s club has no reason to take its foot off the gas now.
Jose Hager opened with fireworks. With 14:19 left in the first quarter, he found Edward Garrett for a 65-yard touchdown, and Robert Johnson’s extra point made it 7-0. Garrett was a matchup problem all afternoon, finishing with 73 rushing yards and 104 receiving yards, including that scoring catch. Hager finished with 322 passing yards and two touchdowns, but the numbers came with a warning label: the Falcons picked him off twice.
Burlington had a chance to widen the gap in the first quarter, but Gary Moniz intercepted Hager near the Falcons’ goal line. The Bombers still reached 10-0 early in the second on Johnson’s 37-yard field goal. Then Max Vogt’s interception gave the Falcons life, and Chuck Hills made Burlington pay immediately, connecting with Nate Cannon for a 31-yard touchdown. The Falcons’ extra point cut the margin to 10-7 before halftime.
The Bombers responded with another Johnson field goal, this one from 52 yards, to make it 13-7 in the third. The Falcons got a break when Derrick Slater’s offsides penalty followed a missed 56-yard field goal, giving Nathan Hosking another chance. Hosking converted from 51 yards, and suddenly Burlington’s advantage was just 13-10.
That was as close as the visitors got. With 9:07 remaining, Hager turned third-and-17 into a dagger, hitting Robert Lucero for a 48-yard touchdown. Johnson’s kick made it 20-10. Lucero’s score was the answer the Bombers needed—and a reminder that this offense can turn a long yardage situation into a one-play knockout.
The defense finished the argument. After a Falcons fumble, which they recovered themselves, Hills threw an interception to John Viola with 4:06 left. Burlington held the Falcons to 2-for-11 on third down, while converting 7 of 15 of its own. The Bombers allowed a tense stretch, not a collapse. At 10-0, they remain the team everyone in the division has to chase.
Bombers Stay Perfect, Shut Down Falcons’ Late Push
Jose Hager’s 48-yard strike to Robert Lucero restored breathing room, and John Viola’s interception helped seal a 20-10 Burlington win.
