For a brief stretch, the Marauders had the kind of sudden spark that can change the feel of a season. Zane Griswold blocked a Voodoo punt late in the first quarter, recovered it and raced 23 yards for a touchdown. Antonio Carson’s extra point made it 7-3, and Billings carried that lead into the second quarter.
The rest of the afternoon belonged to the pressure and opportunism of the Voodoo, who beat the Marauders 29-10 on Saturday. Billings is now 2-6 and has lost four in a row, a difficult stretch made more costly by how quickly this one got away after the early score.
Vicente Bell’s interception of Daniel Navarrette set the Marauders up at the Voodoo 21 in the second quarter. Billings came away with only Carson’s 21-yard field goal, extending its lead to 10-3. But the Voodoo answered with a field goal, then took the lead on Navarrette’s four-yard touchdown pass to Jason Ruffin with 1:12 left in the half. The extra point made it 13-10 at the break.
A 51-yard Gregory Dejean field goal opened the second-half scoring, and another Voodoo kick pushed the margin to 19-10. The Marauders had chances to interrupt that climb: Ryan Twiggs forced a fumble, and the defense had two interceptions of its own. But Billings’ offense could not turn those moments into points.
The numbers tell the story of a unit that never found room to settle. The Marauders completed just 6 of 31 passes for 59 yards, threw three interceptions and managed 46 yards on three carries. Norman Calhoun was intercepted twice in the second half, including a pick by Kurt Pettis after the Voodoo had advanced to the Marauders’ 6-yard line.
Then came the sequence that put the game beyond reach. After Bell intercepted Navarrette near the goal line, Calhoun was sacked in the end zone for a safety. On Billings’ next possession, another sack produced a second safety, and the Voodoo led 23-10. A later Calhoun interception helped set up Dejean’s fifth field goal; his sixth, from 54 yards, closed the scoring at 29-10.
There was fight in the opening quarter, and the defense created turnovers. But with the Marauders’ record at 2-6 and the losing streak now at four, this was another reminder that flashes are not enough. Alexander Dean’s team will need a steadier answer on offense to turn those flashes into momentum.
Marauders’ early spark swallowed by Voodoo pressure in 29-10 loss
Zane Griswold’s blocked-punt touchdown gave Billings a first-quarter lead, but three interceptions and two safeties turned a promising start into a fourth straight defeat.
