Geechee Gossip

By raymattison21

The Charleston Geechee will be playing home games in a town 30 miles north of Charleston . Rich in football traditions and records they will follow in the footsteps of the late great and all time most successful football Coach John McKissick. With 621 wins and 10 state championships the Geechee have some big shoes to fill.

McKissick Field , Memorial Stadium

Capacity: 10,000

Built: 1948

Cost: $20,000

Notable: The stadium, owned by the Summerville Exchange Club, is the epitome of what you would expect in a Southern town that loves high school football. The stadium is ringed by beautiful live oaks. The two-story pressbox is one of the best in the state. In 2008, more than $150,000 in improvements were made, including a $115,000 videoboard/scoreboard.

NFLers that played here: Wide receiver A.J. Green (Cincinnati Bengals); offensive lineman Kevin Long (Tennessee Titans).

Scoop McStory here reporting an exclusive .

Behind closed doors this off season Head Coach Robert Gardner and Defensive Coordinator Willie Nolan have been tinkering around alot. Nolan the more experienced of the two, at age 51, has had some time to think up this defensive scheme. Coach Rob, as the players know him, put his thoughts in on it as well as we all know how he like to use various ways to get to that QB.

The two have come up with basically two defensive fronts that will give offensive coordinators around the league headaches all season long. They call them the 3-3 weak and 4-2 spread. The key to getting these schemes to work is that dline. That have to be big strong and athletic . As well as refined technical assassins that will execute every down . These big guys all have 3 gap responsibility on almost every down. Not only will they have to hold thier ground they will have to cover it as well. Needless to say they will need to step up there game.

With these big guys taking up a lot of space that gives our rangy group of linebackers alot of leeway on what they will be capable of. From locking down man coverage on slot recievers to going on heat seek mode during blitz calls. In other words we are putting them in place to be play makers.

Similar is the defensive backs. They are real talented , and the main reason this defensive will be possible . All four of these guys will be playing in the NFL one day. They can man up drop in to zone and bump with the best of them. All those skills will be locking this scheme down . Cause if he's guys don't show up as the last line of defense the big hitting offenses will be left with alot of one on one matches. Coach Nolan knows these are the best, but admits it will be some time to truly see what these guys can do.

Needless to say we are so excited to results of this big play , big talk team. It's early to claim anything but in discussing the team result of such a scheme both coaches seemed to give off a stench of being tops in all defensive categories.

No talk of the offense just yet. They didn't even mention anything except camp will be a big factor . They were quoted as" we got a bunch of unknown guys on O and position converts " they both laughed and I thought to my self what was so funny? Then coach Rob remarked " these guys think are rejects, ignored by top NFL scouts due to clear flaws in their game at the collegiate level. When in reality my crew and I just might have seen something special in them, but camp will be there true fate. Time too, cause we plan on contenting......not watching from the sidelines "

Offensive skill positions pre/ post camp evaluations and position battles. Probably the most important camp cause it is the first after an allocation draft.

QBs...this is a true battle or a tri fecta experiment gone wrong. Salter was the top pick .

6 QB J Lopez
(57/59) Year: 6

4 QB R Salter......decent camp. Will get reps with the first team.
(47/73) Year: 3

7 QB R Gargano....great camp. Everything we could have hoped for. Probably be the number 2 by seasons end.
(37/75) Year: 2
i
12 QB C Cormier
(29/57) Year: 2
i
5 QB L Mickens
(24/56) Year: R
i
3 QB B Brooks
(21/52) Year: R

RB....this group will split carries and we will see who will emerge as the cream . Most look like whey right now. We got some bruisers and big hitters in this crew. Camp will tell alot. Eyes are on J.J. and the "missing" Link as a formidable inside outside combo, but they will have to prove there high draft spot.
i
44 RB A Lage.......he stays low , but like to go outside too much. Looks like he still will have to prove himself.
(44/64) Year: 4
i
33 RB R Booth.... can run the ball, but a position switch has him on a learning curve.
(39/79) Year: 5
i
22 RB J Jackson.....really poor camp. Blazing speed, but no real vision....looks like a one cut kinda guy. Will he have enough skill to stay on the feildl
(39/79) Year: 2
i
46 RB M Link.......big and strong....maybe too big , but he will get a shot at RB. Most of his snaps there will be out of the single back sets.
(37/78) Year: 4
i
37 FB E Wright
(33/75) Year: 4
i
25 RB B Almodovar......poor camp....Running skills are not what we need right now.
(28/64) Year: 2

FB......Very versatile group of big men who will touch the ball in different ways. Some are athletic and some are technical .
i
37 FB E Wright
(38/76) Year: 4
i
41 FB D Price
(36/74) Year: 2
i
25 RB B Almodovar
(34/68) Year: 2
i
82 FB M Roque
(30/74) Year: 2

TE......Very similar crew here as these guys are spot players . They will be used as H-back types that will line up elsewhere also. Fryar is the only true TE. Wright was targeted for his ability to get vertical .
i
46 RB M Link.........depending on how the others play is what will dictate his snaps here.
(55/82) Year: 4
i
37 FB E Wright
(51/70) Year: 4
i
81 TE B Fryar
(49/61) Year: 5
i
82 FB M Roque
(36/70) Year: 2
i
89 WR B Smith
(32/64) Year: 2

WR.....The most interesting group . A close look will be on them, but passing will only happen out of desperation . These guys might take some time to produce big numbers . Rookie Koehler will start one day, but he is the only guarantee .
i
16 WR J Carolan.....poor camp. He may be a return specialist a 3rd down back.
(47/73) Year: 3
i
80 WR A James. ......nice camp....young and raw but most likely the number 2 reciever. Time is needed.
(38/65) Year: 2
i
22 RB J Jackson
(36/81) Year: 2
i
84 WR I Koehler......what we expected. He is the one for now, but creativity will get him reps so he can learn as fast as possible .
(34/86) Year: R
i
83 WR I Rivera
(32/65) Year: 3
i
89 WR B Smith......this TE convert looks to have made his way into the lineup as the slot reciever.
(29/67) Year: 2
i
87 WR D Lockridge
(29/62) Year: 3

Presason game one vs the Lyons Kings will be a good test for the Geechee. The Kings had a great camp and has a solid core of young players. You know there will be a lot of mistakes this game as a slew of Rookies will see significant time for both teams. It will come down to who executes and who doesn't . Therenis nodoubt gameplans will be the highlight.

Geechee 17...... Kings 23.

Scoops late night scoop.....

The Kings have got a rudder to add to the hull and sail. This rudder steers to the direction of the late great AL Davis. What effect will this have on the outcome of the game? Right now it way too early , but we know players will be flying around the feild . Seven months and several leagues experience was just added to Kings resume.

Updated score.....

Geechee 27 ......Kings ......28

There's no doubt it will be a close one.

After two preseason games some of the Geechees players are showing what they can do. Many questions are there and some big holes are glaring... (3/244/3 TDs on bomb passes late in the game ) but overall everything is going as expected .

Offensively they have impressed the GM.

The QBS have been doing better than average (5 yr vet Lopez 5 tds). ...throwing deep and putting up points . The offensive coordinators want to see what the young QBs can do with the majority of the snaps for the final two games.

The back field has held it ground. Some highlights are from Booth (33 yrd long) as he shown some nice cut backs out of the three wide sets leaving defenders and coaches speechless . The others have shown some flashes but are having enough trouble just holding on to the ball.

The receiving corps are making plays, but I think teams have been keying on the running game leaving huge holes in coverage . Around 6 passes that could have been easy catches were just not made. Luckily , some brilliant run after the catches have put up huge numbers. Coaches are looking for Carolans continuation of his ability to stretch the defense ( 26 ypc).

The offenive line has held there own by keeping sack rates below 5 percent and averaging over 150 ypg on the ground. They have had some trouble keeping up with blitz packages . Certain combos of defenders coming from different places has put a wrench in the passing and running game at times. Still they continue to grind and enable the offense to control the clock by a margin of plus 24 minutes.

Defensively things are going as expected , but coaches know the huge holes that have not been exposed yet. DC Nolan reiterated after last games defensive perfection..." this is the goal of our defense , but they gave this one to us . .....it will not .....I repeat will not be this easy the when the regular season starts. " as a team defense the Geechee starters have looked great (allowing 3.5 ppg during there half of play) .

Dline has seen rookie End K. Lino put pressure on qbs along with DT Cooper holding his own (5 tac 2 sacks vs. The Spartans ) . Big man DT Ruiz has clogged the middle and oline convert R Foderan has gotten to the QB and disrupted several passes . He's still a long shot to make the team.

Linebacker play has been back and forth . Nice games out of Santo and Carroll has turned some heads , but the responsibility that put on these guys is truly yet to be tested .

The starting DBS have shown up .....last game CB Mitchell picked off two *****, and as a unit they allowed only 9 receptions in two halfs of play while knocking down three passes . On the other hand backups have not handled the pressure equally by allowing deep passes way too often. Almost with regularity . Coaches are counting on the veteran SS Goff to help install the dominant mentality into these young guys.

Six foot three two hundred and fifty eight pound bruiser, Micheal "the missing" Link will get his first shot at RB this week . Shifting from TE over to RB proves to be a "risky" move by coaches, but they are interested in seeing his ability to move the chains.

" He got to be quick on his first step, cause this team likes to blitz alot" says back feild coach Thomas Blazer.

There is no doubt the results will be interesting . ....successful . ....well maybe not.

Blaze continues saying " this move is for Micheal to gain some experience at that position , cause he is in our future plans to grind out some tough yards"

Young QBS Salter and Gargano will run the show this week also, so expect some bumps in the road.

Scoop McStory signing out.
