Good news! Version 0.4.4 has been officially released. This update improves the passing game, both on offense and defense. Updates have been made to pass timing, QB pass decision making, secondary coverage, and QB pocket awareness, among other small tweaks.

As leagues conclude their current season they will roll into 0.4.4. You can identify which engine your league is currently using by looking in the footer of the league page.

The new game version, 4.4 is up and running for this league. Would suggest you substantially reduce long passing, or you will be sacked to death. This is a major game change, here is a copy of seth's review ....

We jumped the line and are now on 0.4.4!

HERE IS WHAT THAT MEANS

* Downfield coverage is now fixed. No more watching your good M2M DBs watch WRs blow right past them. The trade off is that passing yards may appear to go down, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. (Just look at the silly numbers I'm putting up in 19.)

* Catch algorithms are updated. No more of the 0.4.3 nerfs. I haven't noticed any meaningful difference in high catch WRs and low catch WRs, so keep an eye open for it.

* The throw the pitch 15 yards behind the LOS on a pitch play is fixed. 'Nuff said.

* Edge rushing is more dangerous. Watch this one closely. OTs will sometimes block inside. I'm almost certain this is a play knowledge thing, but if it gets to be egregious let me know. I've been tracking it in beta. It's not a game breaker, but you can get more sacks.

Part of the reason for the increased sacks is better coverage down the field. On long passing plays the QB can't just pick the defense apart anymore.

* QBs make faster decisions. They will check down on passing plays if no one is open downfield faster. The bonus is that hook and curl routes WORK probably for the first time ever! If you want to know all about the algorithm behind this, let me know and I'll explain it in as much excruciating detail as I understand it. IT'S A RIPPING TALE!

* QBs don't wander around as much as they used to. They will also back straight up out of pressure as opposed to always moving sideways or into it.

* QBs throw the ball away.

* Hook routes work.

recent post in MFN 1 Beta discussion by jdb regarding increased sacks & long pass plays....

Ok, I did a little study into Denver's game, the 13 sacks were broken down by:

1 - short pass
6 - medium pass
6 - long pass

His distribution of passing plays are 7 Short Pass, 19 Medium Pass, and 25 Long Pass.

I'm not 100% sure I have a problem with that, as that is going to be a hazard of throwing those longer passes.

One of my issues is this. I have seen team sacks range from 10-20 per game. This applies even to the mediocre to bad defenses. In no football universe does a mediocre to bad defense get as many sacks as a good to stellar defense. If that is going to be the case just make every league a rosters only league.

If anyone in this leagues wants to see a 4.4 game: In USFL/WFL, seth and I combined for 178 total yards and 24 sacks.

As you can see, the QB just isn't pulling the trigger on anything medium/long. I can't believe I'm going to make a gameplan that looks like it came out of the 1920's.

Man, this is really a whack situation so far with 4.4. 4.3 was not as much fun as 4.2, IMHO, and this has made it worse. But... there are some good things, like the pitch fix, and the defensive coverage being improved. But the sacks and long/med pass play situation is really bad. My offense gameplanning will change significantly. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing, the other side of the coin is that it changes the game up and you have to adapt to compete. You will be playing a different game and using a different approach if you want to win, which Im pretty sure everyone does, lol.

As I have stated in other forums, it best to offer an option for 3rd and long to punt then getting a sack, run the ball, or complete an 8 yard pass.

There are some med pass plays that will be best for 3rd & long, and passing in general, you will need to review game logs and play results, eliminate med passes that are generating less than 3 yds per and getting sacked. Just lost 2 games in other leagues due to the offense being topsy turvy from 4.3 and not changing the offense gameplan enough.

I'm just going ahead and hiring new coaches (low stats) just so I can start running the new playbook. If you look at Ray and Seth, it's West-Coast/Possession that works now and I don't see MFN going back to the chunk-play style again.

The other thing is you've also got to evaluate players differently. It's such a change that I'm just going with the complete tear-down and rebuild now, hoping to get out ahead of 90% of the other owners in MFN.

As far as 3rd and long, you just can't let yourself get that far or it's sack-city if you have to wait on option 1 getting downfield. Just gotta go underneath and hope to get separation.

Now I need lineman with the speed to pull, better possession receivers, and complete running backs (catching). All of which is the polar opposite of what I've been doing :P
